Brinklow under 8’s v Brinklow under 8 Colts
“I dribbled with the ball, did some skills then had a shot just inside the box” was how under Brinklow 8’s Colts striker, Hamish described his goal. Brinklow under 8’s were playing Brinklow under 8 Colts in what might have been seen as a Brinklow under 8’s mini football festival.

The teams lined up before the game.

There certainly was a festive atmosphere amongst the large crowd of parents and various other relatives who wildly cheered every kick of the ball. There was even a barbeque. If Ryan Giggs wants to rejuvenate Man United then he has clearly missed a trick by seemingly overlooking a pitch - side barbecue. Any cynic with negative views on the state of our national sport would have been would have undergone a complete reversal in their opinion by being at Barr Lane last Saturday. Two teams of seven eight year olds spent forty minutes honing their football skills, chasing every ball, challenging for every half – chance and running like racehorses.

The game and whole occasion was also characterised by a strong element of fun. Yes, there was fun in skip loads. It was immediately obvious that everyone, players and spectators, was there to have a good time.

Doing a bit of skill

Go on you must put my cross in!

Yes, there was fun in skiploads,

Playing for Brinklow really is this good.

Goal scorer Ed Thomas said “I was dribbling the ball. I had a shot with my left foot which the goalie saved. The ball came back out to me and I hit a left foot shot into the net”.

Hot – shot Spencer Coward bagged two goals. Spencer managed to chip the keeper from ten yards for his second goal. Attempts to interview him about the first goal were met with advice that his Agent should be contacted if I wanted any further comment.

Alex Frere described his goal as “Ed (Thomas) was running with the ball, he passed it to me. I shot from just outside the box”.

Monty impressed us with his shooting skills whilst Jimmy Scanlon fearlessly threw himself at every ball that came near his goal.

Man-of – the match, William Antrobus said how much he enjoys football. William has been playing at Brinklow for three years and plays in Brinklow Juniors midfield. William has scored six times this season and has been awarded Man- of –the Match four times.

In the days where some Premiership footballers are paid almost double the average house price every week it is noteworthy that Brinklow’ s managers, Stu and Gary, are paid nothing, zilch, nowt at all.

After the two under 8’s teams had finished their match. Michael Coates presented both teams with new Brinklow F.C. hoodies. Well done Mr Coates your contribution to Junior Football is very much appreciated!

It was then the turn over the over 8’s, and we are talking in terms of significantly over 8’s, to take the field of play. Eager to show son’s how football was played “in my day “the over 8’s were splendidly attired in their best replica tops, neatly ironed for the occasion. I spotted AVFC, WBA and what appeared to be a couple of England Rugby tops on display. As suspected, some of the Dads were secretly fans of the game that involves men running around a field and cuddling each other. (Do you really think this is setting a good example Dads?).

The over 8’s put up a dreadful performance of what can only loosely be described as football, punctuated by over – exuberant goal celebrations. They were easily outclassed by the under 8’s with their silky – smooth skills.

With summer on its way thoughts are turning to the World Cup. Will we hear of an England player “doing some skills” or “dribbling with the ball”? Will there be a barbeque in Manaus? Will Rooney, Gerrard, Sturridge and Hart have more fun in Brazil than two teams of eight year olds in Brinklow?

I very much doubt it.

We all got Brinklow hoodies.

Brinklow 5 (Hilton7, Kennedy 11, Edwards 19, 31,Whitehouse 27) Leamington Hibernian Thistles 1
Bedworth Nursing Cup Final (Under 12’s)

Brinklow’s young guns brought the silverware home with an emphatic victory. Any cup final nerves were swiftly allayed after seven minutes when Jack Hilton pounced upon a cross and slotted the ball past the Hibs keeper. Four minutes later further evidence of Brinklow’s settling into the game the better of the two teams was provided. A perfectly flighted corner was supplied, by Jack Edwards, for Luke Kennedy to rise above the Hibs defence to apply a text-book perfect header to double the lead. Brinklow were now very much the dominant side and were having the vast majority of the play and it came as no surprise when they added a third on 19 minutes. Jack Edwards converted a Todd Loveitt’s free kick with a deft header. Leamington hit back on 25 minutes with a goal on the break and completely against the run of play. Any thoughts of a Hibs revival were put aside when Cameron Whitehouse volleyed home from close range two minutes later. The seemingly unplayable Jack Edwards effectively put the game to bed in the first minute of the second-half running on to a through ball and slipped it past the keeper. Ollie Parker in the Brinklow goal was called into action soon after to deny Hibs on 37 minutes. Brinklow continued to play their football but could not add to their tally and held any threat Hibs showed at bay to claim an historic victory. No Brinklow Junior team has ever won this trophy before.

Brinklow: Nine from Ollie Parker, Todd Loveitt, Luke Kennedy, Connor Pulford, Jack Edwards, John Coleman, Ben Gregory, Alex Bragger, Jack Hilton, Callum Williams, Cameron Whitehouse, Ben Mills. Daniel Kelly

Welcome to Wayne’s world!

Northampton Town Academy Development 2 (3, 62)
Brinklow U/12’s 14 (Kennedy 23, 45,56 Bragger 32, 64 Whitehouse 38, Edwards 47, 49, 51 , Loveitt 56, Pulford 57, 59, O.G.60, Gregory 65)

It is a November evening in Sixfields, Northampton. A nine-a-side football team playing in a yellow and blue kit are providing a list of superlatives for this match report. If you half-close your eyes and imagine a couple more players on each side it’s easy to believe you are caught in a time-warp. This isn’t 2013. You are somewhere in the 1970’s and you are watching Brazil. The football world of kick and rush and long hopeful punts up-field is a million light years away. Welcome to Wayne’s world.

Brinklow are unbeaten this season; they currently lead John Bryan A League. Most of the players have been together for five years, developing as players, as well as a team. A similar development plan was adopted by another team who had more than their fair share of success. Spain.

As this game was a friendly it was agreed to play three 20 minute intervals.

The game started with no indication of what was to come. Northampton went into a third minute lead when a corner, taken on the right, was deflected into the net from the chest of an incoming player. Stirred into action, Brinklow began to take the bulk of the possession with Cameron Williams, Ben Mills and Ben Gregory all giving notice of their intentions in front of goal.

The score remained unchanged for twenty minutes when Brinklow, after a period of prolonged pressure, were awarded a corner on the left. The ball was cleared only to fall to Luke Kennedy who blasted a shot high into the roof of the net. Alex Bragger had a rasping shot saved on 28 minutes but was not to be denied three minutes later when he gave his team the lead after being first to a loose ball in front of goal. Todd Loveitt almost added to the scoreline on 34 minutes when the very busy, and very good, Northampton keeper managed to parry his shot away after he was in a one-on-one position. On 37 minutes John Coleman hit a vicous strike against the bar following neat approach play from Alex Bragger and Ben Mills. One minute later Brinklow were awarded a corner on the right, the Northampton defence were unable to clear and Cameron Whitehouse latched onto a loose ball to increase Brinklow’s lead. On 45 minutes Alex Bragger fed Callum Williams who provided a cross that Northampton were unable to clear, the loose ball being pounced upon by Luke Kennedy who coolly slotted home. Luke Kennedy turned into provider on 47 minutes winning the ball and producing a quality cross to set up Jack Edwards for Brinklow’s fifth.

Jack Edwards dribbled past the Northampton keeper to increase Brinklow’s lead two minutes later and completed his hat - trick on 51 minutes finishing after a fine solo run. On 53 minutes a Northampton break had hearts in mouths but resolute defending from Cameron Whitehouse saw off the threat. Callum Williams made it 8-1 on 54 minutes after latching onto a pass from Luke Kennedy. A powerful header from Todd Loveitt on 56 minutes increased Brinklow’s lead further.

Connor Pulford deservedly managed to bag two goals on 57 and 59 minutes to cap off a fine individual performance. An own goal on the hour increased Brinklow’s lead. Northampton managed a goal on the break on sixty two minutes but it was Brinklow who had the final word when Ben Gregory scored with the last kick of the game.

This was an emphatic win for the team from the little village in East Warwickshire. Further fixtures against Academy teams from Leicester City Academy and Northampton Town Elite are planned for the future.

Big thanks are due to Cathy Bedford at The White Lion B and B for sponsoring this team. Your sponsorship is very much appreciated and is definitely producing dividends.

Brinklow:(Nine from) Ollie Parker, Ben Gregory, Ben Mills, Luke Kennedy, Todd Loveitt, Alex Bragger, John Coleman, Jack Edwards, Callum Williams, Connor Pulford, Cameron Whitehouse.

U11s (Red) were Runners up in the Joe Spooner Cup held at Rugby Town last weekend. The final was an evenly fought encounter with our boys creating the best chance. But it wasn’t to be, and after the game finished 0-0, we lost out on penalties. Well done to St Nicolas who were worthy winners. But special praise goes to our boys who without substitutes and Captain Draper having to go in goal in the first game, gave everything for each other. Well done lads!!.
